Poet and psychologist. Born in Hersham, Surrey. Son of Rev. John Hampden Gurney (1802–1862) and Mary Grey. After private schooling and tutoring, attended Trinity College, Cambridge, securing a fellowship. Initially passionate about music, he later shifted his focus to studying the psychology and philosophy of music. Co-founded the Society for Psychical Research, exploring thought transference, hypnotism, and telepathy, culminating in his Phantasms of the Living (1886). Other publications include The Power of Sound (1880) and Tertium Quid (1887). Found dead likely due to chloroform used for neuralgia relief. Biographical information: ODNB. (NM)
