Illustrator, painter, teacher, and book, furniture, and jewellery designer. Born in Montrose, Angus, Scotland. Daughter of William Hay, an accountant and local farmer, and Elizabeth Middleton Ross. Educated at Old Edinburgh School of Art, where she studied Celtic Ornament under John Duncan. Friend of Patrick Geddes with whom she contributed to the revitalization of Edinburgh’s Old Town and Scottish culture, known as the Scottish Renascence, through Celtic ornaments, intricate designs, especially her initial letters and seasonal Almanacs.
