Working-class painter, illustrator, and writer. Born in London to American parents, who returned with him to America in 1800. Attended the University of Pennsylvania, became apprenticed to a bookseller, then studied at the Pennsylvania Academic of Fine Arts in 1811. Moved back to London in 1811.
