Figure descriptions
Illustrated poem page with multiple component scenes. The boundaries among illustrated
scenes are blurred. The poem title
appears in hand-drawn lettering on a banner at the top of the page. There is a large
drum tied to the left side of the banner with
leather straps. One of the straps hangs over the letter “T” and the other strap crosses
diagonally over the letter “D”. A horn and
decorative baubles are tied to the side of the drum. The title banner is superimposed
over a scene in which a medieval cavalry,
composed of armoured knights on horseback, ride into the distance. The knights ride
in a line and carry both shields and flags.
There is a tree in the background. Below this scene, at the right side of the page,
an enlarged boy stands and looks toward the poem
title. The boy wears a flat cap and holds his hands behind his back. He appears to
be whistling. There are two bundles of plant
matter on the ground beside him. Below the boy, a third scene depicts three drummer
boys marching at the front of a medieval
infantry. There is a crowd of armoured knights marching in formation behind the boys.
Some of the men carry weapons and some carry
flags. The poem text is let into two blank rectangular spaces which are superimposed
over the top-left and bottom-right corners of
the third illustrated scene.
Illustrated poem page with multiple component scenes. The boundaries among illustrated
scenes are blurred. In the top half of
the page, a drummer boy stands under a large tree at the edge of a body of water.
He reaches up to pick something off of a tree
branch which hangs above his head. The boy’s drum, drum sticks, and hat lie on the
ground behind him. A section of the poem text is
let into a blank rectangular space at the left side of this illustrated scene. The
illustration extends slightly to the left of the
poem text, forming a border along the left edge of the poem text. Below this scene,
at the center of the page, there is a small,
“S”-shaped border with squared edges. Inside the border, there is an illustration
of a figure (identified in the poem text as Joan
of Arc) being burned at the stake. This scene occupies a central space between two
sections of the poem text. Below this scene, the
drummer boy stands in full uniform in front of a group of men. A bearded man, identified
as a captain in the poem text, stands at
the front of the group. He holds a spear and stares at the drummer boy. The other
men stand in formation behind the captain and look
toward the boy. The figures are gathered on grass beside a body of water. This scene
forms a full border around a portion of the
poem text, which is let into blank rectangular space on the right side of the illustrated
scene. There is a single-ruled border
along the top and right edges, which extends slightly along the right side of the
bottom edge.
Illustrated poem page with multiple component scenes. The boundaries among illustrated
scenes are blurred. At the center of
the page, the drummer boy stands before a seated soldier. The boy’s hat lies on the
ground. The soldier is in full armour, and is
identified in the poem text as a captain. He looks at the drummer boy. A second boy
stands beside the seated soldier, holding a
horn. There is a crowd of soldiers in the tent behind them. Above this scene and to
the left, two men hold a young boy between them,
guiding him as they all walk into the distance. The boy appears to be the drummer
boy; he wears the drummer boy’s plume hat, and a
drum and drumsticks lie on the ground behind him. The two men both carry weapons over
their shoulders. Above the central illustrated
scene and to the right, a man stands with his back turned to the viewer. He holds
a bow and arrow and looks into the distance toward
the drummer boy. The drummer boy looks back at him. Two sections of the poem text
are let into blank rectangular spaces in the
top-center and the bottom-right of this cluster of illustrations.
