A Frenchman gather’d salad for his dinner,1
From banks where ass and pig their viands got,2
And mused if all that lies ’ twixt beast and sinner3
Be eating salad with a sauce or not.4
It did not strike him that the brute would never5
Indulge his fancy with a thought so clever.6
