Decorated initial letter “O” from the poem’s first word, “Once”. The letter is contained within a small, double-ruled square border. Decorative swirls occupy the spaces between the border and the rounded edges of the “O”, and the space at the center of the letter. The swirl pattern at the center of the “O” looks like a rose with leaves. 1/64 page.
Rectangular tailpiece features two large birds standing under a tree canopy. The tree’s branches descend and touch the ground at the bottom corners of the illustration. Tailpiece is contained within a double-ruled border. The background is dark, but it is illuminated by a pattern of dense dots. 1/16 page.
