As on my bed at morn I mus’d and pray’d,1
I saw my lattice figur’d on the wall,2
The flaunting leaves and flitting birds withal—3
A sunny phantom interlac’d with shade ;4
“ Thanks be to heaven ! ” in happy mood I said ;5
“ What sweeter aid my matins could befal6
“ Than this fair glory from the east hath made ?7
“ What holy sleights hath God, the Lord of all,8
“ To make us feel and see ! We are not free9
“ To say we see not, for the glory comes10
“ Nightly and daily like the flowing sea ;11
“ His lustre pierceth through the midnight glooms,12
“ And, at prime hour, behold, He follows me :13
“ With golden shadows to my secret rooms !”14
