Twilight.

Through the black arch of interlacing trees1
Burns the red sunset, and a blue mist lies2
Cold on the darkening meadows whence arise3
Faint dewy odours as the evening breeze4
Sweeps o’er the sombre grasses of the leas,5
And in the gloom of leafy branches dies ;6
Waking to being as the daylight flies7
An adumbration of dim memories.8
Ah ! the enchanted realms that used to be9
In the wide reaches of our childhood’s sky,10
Vague, lonely, far, immeasurably high !11
In the mysterious fields of infancy12
Beyond whose ultimate verge we could descry13
The brooding shadow of Infinity !14
