Poet and literary scholar. Pseudonym: M. H. Knew many leading literary and artistic figures through her father, Vincent Novello. Worked as a governess 1825-1826. Married Charles Cowden Clarke on 5 July 1828. Author of The Complete Concordance to Shakespeare (published in instalments 1844-1845, then in one volume 1845), as well as several other studies of Shakespeare. Acted in Charles Dickens’ private theatricals. Moved to Nice with her husband in 1856, and then to Genoa in 1861. Biographical information: ODNB. (AC)
