II.
Work is a Godsend most divine, direct :1
The call to active duty, the stern need2
For prompt alacrity and instant deed,3
Teaches the soul its forces to collect,4
Assists it still to raise itself erect5
When beaten prostrate like the wind-blown reed6
By stormy flaw ; it sows the fruitful seed7
Of vigorous resolves, that will protect8
And grow around fresh shoots of budding hope,9
Preserving them from frost of chill despair,—10
Will keep them free from canker-slough, with
scope11
scope11
For spreads of tender leaflets, and prepare12
The way for future blossoms that may twine13
A garland for the brow no more supine.14
