Magazine editor, playwright, and poet. Contributed to Bentley’s Miscellany while Charles Dickens, with whom he became close friends, was editor. Also contributed to New Sporting Magazine. Helped found Punch and served as editor for most of his life. Also helped found Illustrated London News, the Christmas editions of which he edited. Briefly edited both London Journal and The Field.
