Figure descriptions
Illustrated poem page containing multiple scenes. The boundaries among illustrated
scenes are blurred. The illustrated poem
title is at the top of the page in hand-drawn lettering. The “C” from the word “Crow”
is an inhabited initial. There is a crow with
outstretched wings behind the letter. The crow and the letter are contained within
a square double-ruled border. The background is
decorated with curvy lines in the shape of leaves and acorns. There is a small illustration
of a running fox above the illustrated
title. The illustration is contained within a double-ruled border and features a background
decorated with curvy lines in the shape
of leaves. The poem text occupies the center of the page. It is superimposed over
an illustrated scene. In the top portion of the
scene, a stream runs through the countryside. There are trees and bushes in the background
and a flock of birds flies in the sky.
The middle portion of the scene is composed of blank space. In the bottom portion
of the scene, a farmer plows his field. Two horses
pull his plow. Trees border the field and there is an additional figure in the background.
The scene and the poem text are contained
within a series of borders. An interior triple-ruled border partially contains the
scene and the poem text; this border is broken in
the middle third of both the left and right edges. Blank space borders this interior
border. Then, everything is contained within an
exterior border, which is thick, dark, and textured. Enlarged branches with composite
leaves form a final, partial border. The
branches begin in the bottom-center of the page, ascend the left and right edges,
and emerge at the left and right extremities of
the top edge (behind the illustrated title). The texture of the branches matches the
full border around the poem text. At the top of
the right edge of the poem border, the second part of the poem title and the byline
are both written on an irregularly shaped scroll
decorated with florals. Both title and byline appear in hand-drawn lettering. The
illustrator attribution appears in hand-drawn
lettering on a second, irregularly shaped scroll at the left of the bottom edge of
the poem border. Full page.
Illustrated poem page containing multiple scenes. The boundaries among illustrated
scenes are blurred. The poem text is split
into two sections in the top-center and bottom-center of the page. The middle-center
of the page contains no text. The text is
superimposed onto an illustrated scene, which depicts a boy walking barefoot with
a fishing pole toward a body of water in the
foreground. The boy wears suspenders and a wide-brimmed hat. There are plants in the
field and a building stands in the distance. A
flock of birds flies in the sky amidst puffs of clouds. There are multiple plants
growing along the banks of the water in the
foreground. In the top-left corner of the page, to the left of the first section of
poem text, there is a small illustration
featuring chickens and chicks next to an overturned chair. It is contained within
a rectangular border. In the top-right corner of
the page, to the right of the first section of poem text, there is a small illustration
featuring chickens and chicks next to a
barrel and a cage in a hen house. It is contained within a rectangular border. The
first section of poem text in the top-center of
the page is contained on the left, top, and right edges by a thick, dark, and textured
border. The second section of poem text in
the bottom-center of the page is contained on the left, bottom, and right edges by
the same border style. Sparse patterns of swirls
surround both borders on the left and right edges. The central illustrated scene is
contained on the left and right edges, as well
as part of the top edge by an extra-thick, light, textured border.
Illustrated poem page containing multiple scenes. The boundaries among illustrated
scenes are blurred. The illustrated section
at the top is centered and contained in a sketch-like, multi-ruled border. Birds fly
low above a body of water. Lily pads float on
the water. The center section is contained in a border formed from thick, sketch-like
lines. The poem letterpress is let in to this
section in two columns. Two birds fly between the columns, descending toward lily
pads which float on a body of water. The bottom
section shows a woman walking out of a building on a dairy farm. She is carrying two
buckets. There are multiple chickens around the
building, most of which peck at the ground. A crow perches on the dairy roof. A man
and a woman walk together arm-in-arm in the
background. A young girl walks in front of them, and the woman looks down at the girl.
Two similar, vertical rectangles are placed
on either side of this illustrated scene. Both rectangles feature a stem with leaves,
buds, and flowers. A butterfly rests on the
right stem. Both vertical rectangles are contained in sketch-like, multi-ruled borders.
Illustrated poem page containing multiple scenes. The boundaries among illustrated
scenes are blurred. The largest section of
the illustration shows a crow perched on a branch, holding a piece of cheese in its
beak. Flowers grow on the branch. The poem
letterpress is let in to the space below this illustrated scene, at the center of
the page. Another illustrated scene is centered
below the letterpress. In this scene, a fox walks among flowers. Small insects fly
around the flowers. These two illustrated scenes
and the poem letterpress are partially contained in a multi-part border. The outer
part of the border is composed of thick,
sketch-line vertical and horizontal lines. The inner part of the border is composed
of thin, sketch-like lines. A second, full-page
border runs behind the first multi-part border, and around the entire page. A branch
with flowers and leaves is superimposed over
both borders on the left side of the page. On the right side, an illustrated scene
of a woman is contained in a circular frame. The
woman pulls cheese off of a shelf. The room in which she stands is dimly lit but light
enters through a small, latticed window at
the top of the wall. This circular illustration is superimposed over a large branch
with flowers and leaves.
Illustrated poem page containing multiple scenes. The boundaries among illustrated
scenes are blurred. The poem letterpress is
placed in two square borders positioned at the top-right and bottom-left corners of
the page. These borders are composed of thick,
sketch-like, vertical and horizontal lines. A larger border surrounds both smaller
borders and contains the other illustrated
scenes. At the top of the page, to the left of the first section of the poem letterpress,
a crow is contained in a circular,
sketch-like border. Its beak is open and it appears to be vocalizing. Below this scene,
at the left side of the page, a crow and a
fox are contained in smaller, circular borders. A bunch of flowers and leaves is placed
between the two square borders that contain
the poem letterpress. The flowers break into the borders. There are also leaves below
the bottom edge of the second section of
letterpress. At the bottom of the page, to the right of the second section of the
poem letterpress, a fox holding cheese in its
mouth walks behind wild flowers.
Illustrated poem page containing multiple scenes. The boundaries among illustrated
scenes are blurred. The largest section of
the illustration is centered and contained in a sketch-like, multi-ruled border. At
the top, a flock of birds flies around a cluster
of trees next to a body of water. An indiscernible, sketch-like figure stands beside
the trees. There are boats in the water, and a
church stands in the background. The poem letterpress is let in to the space below
this illustrated scene; the illustrated scene and
poem letterpress overlap in some places. Another illustrated scene is centered below
the letterpress. A man and a young girl walk
hand-in-hand away from the viewer. They walk toward a low stone wall. There is a row
of houses beyond the wall, and a flock of birds
flies above the roof tops. These two illustrated scenes and the poem letterpress are
partially contained by a multi-part border. The
outer part of the border is composed of thick, sketch-like, vertical and horizontal
lines. The inner part of the border is composed
of thin, sketch-like lines. Three smaller illustrated scenes are placed around the
outer border. On the top edge, a fox is contained
in a small, rectangular, sketch-like border. A vegetal pattern fills the background
behind the fox. On the right edge, a crow
perches on a branch in a small, square, sketch-like border. A vegetal pattern fills
the background behind the crow. In the
bottom-left corner, a light-coloured bird perches on a branch; it is set against a
dark background. The bird is contained in a
small, circular, sketch-like border. Branches with leaves and flowers emerge from
all sides of the illustrated scenes, filling in
the remaining blank spaces on the page. Butterflies fly in the bottom-left corner.
