Figure descriptions
Illustrated poem page containing multiple scenes. The boundaries among illustrated scenes are blurred. The illustrated poem title is at the top of the page in hand-drawn lettering. The “C” from the word “Crow” is an inhabited initial. There is a crow with outstretched wings behind the letter. The crow and the letter are contained within a square double-ruled border. The background is decorated with curvy lines in the shape of leaves and acorns. There is a small illustration of a running fox above the illustrated title. The illustration is contained within a double-ruled border and features a background decorated with curvy lines in the shape of leaves. The poem text occupies the center of the page. It is superimposed over an illustrated scene. In the top portion of the scene, a stream runs through the countryside. There are trees and bushes in the background and a flock of birds flies in the sky. The middle portion of the scene is composed of blank space. In the bottom portion of the scene, a farmer plows his field. Two horses pull his plow. Trees border the field and there is an additional figure in the background. The scene and the poem text are contained within a series of borders. An interior triple-ruled border partially contains the scene and the poem text; this border is broken in the middle third of both the left and right edges. Blank space borders this interior border. Then, everything is contained within an exterior border, which is thick, dark, and textured. Enlarged branches with composite leaves form a final, partial border. The branches begin in the bottom-center of the page, ascend the left and right edges, and emerge at the left and right extremities of the top edge (behind the illustrated title). The texture of the branches matches the full border around the poem text. At the top of the right edge of the poem border, the second part of the poem title and the byline are both written on an irregularly shaped scroll decorated with florals. Both title and byline appear in hand-drawn lettering. The illustrator attribution appears in hand-drawn lettering on a second, irregularly shaped scroll at the left of the bottom edge of the poem border. Full page.
