Figure descriptions
A decorated initial letter “A” is contained within a double-ruled rectangular border.
There are palm branches inset into the
border, behind and around the initial letter. Behind the initial letter, there is
a vignette featuring a single tall pine tree.
Rowan grows near the base of the tree, and a bird flies in the distance. 1/6 page.
A group of figures, identified in the poem text as a travelling band, rest in the
countryside next to a large boulder. There
is a single pine tree behind the boulder. One bandsman sleeps in the shadow of the
boulder; a drum, a horn, and bagpipes lie in the
grass behind his back. A woman sits with her back against the boulder, holding her
knees in her arms. Her eyes are also closed.
There is a tambourine sitting on the boulder at her side. Two girls sit in front of
the woman; they are stringing rowan-berries on
threads. There are additional boulders around the figures, with small plants, including
rowan, growing around them. A large plain
stretches into the distance. 1/2-page illustration contained
within a dark, medium-weight border.
