Financially supported her family through her translation work. Authored a memoir of her husband, the writer William Henry Smith (1808-1872), whom she married on 5 March 1861. Chambers’s Journal ledger entry for Guilty Thought (published on 3 December 1859) gives her address as 1 Leopold Place, Edinburgh (NLS 341/310).
