Rural-class poet from Devon. Worked at a lace factory from the age of eight until 1847, and then as a rural postman from 1848 until his retirement in 1866. Married Jane Trick on 26 October 1847. Awarded a Civil List Pension in 1857 after Palmerston was impressed by his poem on the Crimean War, The Lion Flag of England. Author of Poems by Edward Capern, Rural Postman of Bideford, Devon (1856), Ballads and Songs (1858), Devonshire Melodist (1862), Wayside Warbles (1865), Sungleams and Shadows (1881).
