Poet, illustrator, editor, and humorist. Son of Thomas Hood, a bookseller and publisher, and Elizabeth Sands, who came from a well-known family of London engravers. Sub-editor of the London Magazine, and editor of New Monthly Magazine. Closely involved with many periodicals, and wrote and illustrated Comic Annuals (1830-1839) and Hood’s Magazine (1844-1845). Married Jane Reynolds, the sister of his close friend John Hamilton Reynolds, on 5 May 1825. Their son, Tom Hood, was a poet and a playwright. Poetry volumes include Odes and Addresses to Great People (1825) written with John Reynolds, and The Plea of the Midsummer Fairies (1827). Biographical information: ODNB. (SP, JS)
