Figure descriptions

A man and a woman, identified in the poem text as Adam and Eve, run away from Eden’s
gate. A ghostly figure flies behind them;
it emerges from a cloud of smoke and appears to emit fire from its hands. Adam and
Eve are both nude from the waist-up and wear
leaves around their hips, covering their genitals. Eve’s long hair blows behind her
and she crouches over and covers her face with
both hands. Adam’s eyes are wide open as he looks behind his shoulder at the ghostly
figure. The figures are surrounded by densely
packed flowers and plants, and there are trees in the distance. Full-page illustration
partially contained within a double-ruled
border; the bottom of the illustration extends out of the border as though the figures
are running through it.
Adam, wearing a skirt of leaves around his hips, stands in the foreground. He holds
one hand to his hip and the other to his
forehead. Eve, also wearing a skirt of leaves around her hips, stands in the background.
She hunches over and places one hand on a
tree while holding the other in front of her chest. Eve looks toward Adam. A dark
tree is centered at the forefront of the
illustration; its branches and leaves ascend the page and then extend out to either
side. There are additional trees in the
background. Full-page illustration partially contained within a double-ruled border;
the bottom of the illustration extends outside
of the border.
Adam, wearing a skirt of leaves around his hips, stands on a small cliff. There are
several plants on the land below the
cliff. His body faces the viewer, but he turns his head to the side and holds his
hand up to run his fingers through his hair.
Branches with leaves extend from the top-right corner, forming a canopy above Adam
and reaching across the rest of the illustration.
Tall mountains contrast with the dark sky in the background. Full-page illustration

border. The branches break the border on the top and right sides.
