Love, Pride, and Forgetfulness.

Ere yet my heart was sweet Love’s tomb,1
Love laboured honey busily.2
I was the hive, and love the bee,3
My heart the honeycomb.4
One very dark and chilly night5
Pride came beneath and held a light.6
The cruel vapours went through all,7
Sweet Love was withered in his cell ;8
Pride took Love’s sweets, and by a spell9
Did change them into gall ;10
And memory though fed by Pride11
Did wax so thin on gall,12
A while she scarecely lived at all.13
What marvel that she died ?14
