We laugh, we cry, we are born, we die,8
Who will riddle me the how and the why ?9

What is it they say ? What do they there ?12
Why two and two make four ? Why round

Why the rock stands still, and the light

The world is somewhat ; it goes on some-

But what is the meaning of then and now ?22
I feel there is something ; but how and what ?23
I know there is somewhat ; but what and

I cannot tell if that somewhat be I.25
The little bird pipeth— ‘ why ? why ?’26
In the summer woods when the sun falls low ;27
And the great bird sits on the opposite bough,28
And stares in his face, and shouts, ‘ how ?
