Figure descriptions
An elderly woman sits in an alcove reading a book. She wears a bonnet with a bow,
a shawl, and a long dress. Trees and flying
birds are visible through the window at her side. Full-page illustration contained
within a single-ruled border.
Symmetrical tailpiece in the shape of an inverted triangle. Two birds fly along the
top edge and intertwine their necks at the
center. A plant grows from the bottom point of the tailpiece; its two leafy stems
grow upward along the left and right edges. A
snake wraps its body between the two stems of the plant. The birds hold the snake’s
body in their beaks. 1/32 page.
