Served as a diplomat in Washington, The Hague, Vienna, Madrid, Paris, and Lisbon. Viceroy of India (1876-1880). Returned to England and was created Earl of Lytton in 1880. Author of several volumes of poetry including Clytemnestra, The Earl’s Return and Other Poems (1855), The Wanderer (1857), Orval, or, The Fool in Time (1869), Chronicles and Characters (1868), and Fables in Song (1874).
