Poems often signed By the Author of ‘John Halifax, Gentleman.’ Born in Hartshill, Staffordshire. Father was a nonconformist minister. Family moved to London in 1839. After her mother’s death in 1845, Craik’s father abandoned his children, and Craik became a professional writer. Wrote on the Woman Question, promoting single women’s self-sufficiency and moral authority. Married George Lillie Craik (1837-1905) on 29 April 1865; their daughter, Dorothy, was adopted as an infant.
