Children’s writer, poet, translator, and animal welfare campaigner. Pseudonym: Jean Boncœur. Born in Birmingham. Author of several children’s books including Karl and the Six Little Dwarfs (1863). Championed animal welfare including by teaching children, through stories, to respect animals, for example The Four Cats of the Tippertons and Other Stories about Animals (1881). Contributed to the Birmingham Daily Post and Animal’s Friend. In 1876 she established a prize awarded to school children in Birmingham for the best essays on animal welfare. She never married.
